Pamela Copeland - Painter of Pastels in Southern Alberta
Gallery 2...Pastel work - new work added as completed.
Nature yields amazing sculpture.Buffeted and stroked by wind and water, utilitarian tree wood is stripped and smoothed to reveal bare bones structure. The last stop before decomposition, naked limbs and roots create sinuous and intriguing shapes and textures. The life cycle coming to conclusion – an argument for alternatives to clear-cutting.Each piece of wood lures me in and becomes a layered landscape.
The driftwood offers a different perspective of the overwhelming majesty of the Canadian wilderness – a poignant contrast to the grandeur of the towering forests in their prime. The unadorned and understated beauty of driftwood captivates the senses.
The act of rendering such indigenous landscapes to paper is a truly kinesthetic process that is both exhilarating and satisfying. It is my intent and my hope that the lushness of color and the sensuality of form and line will entice the viewer to investigate each driftwood landscape on their own.
Children inspire us.With innocence and honesty, they perform the dance of life each day.Ignorant of political correctness or ambiguity, they wear their feelings and emotions as easily as their skin.Watching them play, discover new ideas or reacting to others, we are able to once again see life through their eyes. They perform these daily scenes with simple truth and remind us of kinder times. We recall those days with warmth and affection and are drawn to those who remind us.Through youth, we may rediscover beauty, joy, pathos and the excitement of living each day authentically.Children perform the human ballet instinctively. With the ability to bounce back from adversity as well as experience unabashed joy, they are beacons of hope for us all.We see a little of ourselves in them again.
The pieces that grew into this show represent some of the moments that I have ‘seen’ through my youngest daughter’s eyes.Through layering and manipulation of chalk pastel on Canson paper, I have tried to capture the energy, grace and optimism that I see in her.She is a constant source of the marvelous, mercurial mix of characteristics and traits that make humans so fascinating and so maddening.
